Professional Rug Cleaning Vs. At-Home Cleaning

Professional Rug Cleaning Vs. At-Home Cleaning

When it comes to everyday spills on area rugs, there are few times when these stains can be cared for at home, however, most times these spots need to be treated by a professional at a wash facility. If a stain is incorrectly evaluated, and treated with an over-the-counter spot cleaner instead of being treated by a professional, the stain will permanently set.

To avoid setting stains, here are a few stains that can be treated at home, and a few that should be left to the pros.

Note: These suggestions are based on general terms. Every rug and stain is different. If you have a high-end, delicate area rug, always have your rug professionally cleaned. As far as all other rugs go, we always suggest to have your rug, and any stains on it, treated by a professional at a wash facility.  If you are unsure as to whether the stain is treatable at home, and/or to be sure you don't permanently damage your rug, leave the spot(s) untouched, and immediately have your area rug professionally cleaned.

Can Be Treated at Home:

  • Sugar stains such as those caused by soda, beer, etc.
  • Pet feces (light amount with solid texture)
  • Coffee (if caught early enough)
Definitely Leave it to the Pros:
  • Pet Urine, Vomit, or Feces (heavy amount/liquid texture)
  • Playdoh
  • Chocolate
  • Wine
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Permanent Marker
  • Juice
  • Mustard & Ketchup

The most important thing to note is that there is a very big difference between a professional cleaning at a wash facility, and at-home steam cleaner. A professional cleaning is so important for an area rug. Steam cleaning doesn’t extract dirt and bacteria the way a full-submersion wash does. Rugs also cannot be effectively spot-treated. What this means is that in order to properly and effectively rid your area rug of all bacteria, pet feces, pet urine, etc. the entire rug needs to be submerged in water. You cannot wash only the spot or stain. Sure, sometimes you can treat a spot at home, but that does not mean the liquid or bacteria is completely out of the rug. This is why we treat each rug in our state-of-the-art wash facility, where we can fully submerge the entire rug in water, shampoo it, remove all excess liquid and then hang the rug to dry in our temperature and humidity-controlled drying room.

As mentioned above, we always suggest you have your rug cleaned by a professional, as they have the necessary techniques and cleaning equipment, to keep the stains from permanently setting. Once a stain has set, a professional cannot get the stain out.
